Summary : Rockstar went right to work on this game after GTA IV came out. After seven years in development, the effort they put into this game really shows.
You all knew this was coming. It was inevitable that a GTA V review would be written for the site. In my opinion, the GTA franchise offers the best open world experience on the market today. Rockstar is the greatest development company; they know what makes a good game and they know how to write a damn good story.
This story is far more unique than previous GTA titles because we follow three protagonists instead of just one.
Franklin Clinton: He is a former gang member and repo man who is trying to get money quick to earn the affection of his ex-girlfriend Tanisha. Franklin is the character you grow to love right from the moment he appears on the screen.
Michael De Santa: Michael is a former professional bank robber who retires after a bank job goes awry. I’ve talked to many people who say that Michael is their least favorite character in the game, and as much as I love Ned Luke (Michael’s voice actor), I have to agree. Michael is the least likeable character in the game
Trevor Phillips: Trevor is the best character out of the three. He is a crazy, dirty, psychopathic meth distributor. You will just fall in love with this character right from the get go. He is a friend and former associate of Michael in the beginning of the game, which leads me to the next portion of this review.
We start the game in the past, following three bank robbers in North Yankton in the prologue of the game. We find out later that two of the three bank robbers are actually the protagonists of the game, Michael Townley & Trevor Phillips. The bank job doesn’t go as planned when Michael and Brad (who is a minor character, but plays a big role in the story) are shot. Trevor is determined to stay and help his friends, but eventually has to escape a swarm of cops.
The prologue ends as we pick up the story again with Michael, who is now apart of the witness protection program, his last name changed to De Santa. Michael now lives in a mansion in Los Santos with his unfaithful wife Amanda and his two bratty kids, Jimmy and Tracey. Franklin is sent on a job to reposses a jeep from a bratty kid named Jimmy De Santa, only to be confronted by Michael as he is on his way back to the dealership with the vehicle. Michael decides to take Franklin under his wing and teach him the ropes about masking money. Michael and Franklin, along with a team that you will put together, set up a bank heist, Michael’s first job since the failed bank job in North Yankton. The ease of this heist depends on what methods the player uses to pull it off. The heist eventually gets on the news and catches the attention of one Trevor Phillips, who believes that Michael died in the North Yankton job. I will refrain from telling you why Trevor thought this, considering it is a pretty big spoiler. Trevor travels to Los Santos in search of his “dead” friend and they meet up after years of not seeing each other. At first there is tension, but they eventually are peaceable with each other. Trevor is initially wary of Franklin, but Michael convinces Trevor that Franklin is one of them.
The story of GTA V is so well written that it really makes you admire these characters, even when some of them do despicable things such as eating human remains (take a wild guess who that is). The story does not end after you beat the game – as with all GTA games, there is a massive amount of side content that adds to the world of the game, I beat Grand Theft Auto V months ago and I am still getting enjoyment out of the main story.
I do not think I can talk about the online experience without mentioning the fiasco that happened when the online mode was first launched. The servers were completely fucked at launch – and I expected them to be. However, this actually goes to show how awesome Rockstar is, because in response to the online function shitting the bed for the first few days and the users sometimes having their characters deleted, they gave everyone $500,000 dollars in online money to make up for the fact that the servers were down.
The online game mode actually has a story that takes place about a few months before the actual events of GTA V. You level up just as you would with any online mode. It’s a ton of fun! If you have a headset, you will have lots of fun, although there are kids who get on their headsets and annoy literally everyone in the room. Online is a fun place to troll as well. I consider myself a professional troll, so I will get on the headset and say some of the wackiest shit you’ve heard – and it is hilarious.
GTA V would not be a GTA title without a little bit of controversy. There is a torture scene in the main story mode which has created a lot of controversy amongst political pundits. In some areas of the world, this game is banned just because of that one mission. I’ve said it before and I will say it again: Realism in games is great. Games are a brilliant piece of art. If it doesn’t deal with real life, then it kind of takes away from the awesome experience of this great game.
This is going to be a first for my reviews, but…10/10! This game deserves a perfect score, simply because of its story, the voice acting and the graphics. This game really pushes the last gen consoles to their max. I would’ve loved to see what they could have done on the PS4 and Xbox One. This is the greatest GTA game to date. Rockstar went right to work on this game after GTA IV came out. After seven years in development, the effort they put into this game really shows.
